In the case that you need medication and cannot afford it, check out needymeds and the medicine program which offer free or really discounted meds for people who need them. Also, check out this post.

For therapy, look around your area for group sessions, which tend to cost less than one-on-one sessions with a therapist/counsellor. 

Use psychology today or therapist-finder to find therapists in your area and ask them about their rates. There are some therapists [especially those who are doing well financially] that will offer “sliding rates” where they will accept cash payments on a scale that depends on your current financial situation. Not all therapists or counselling providers offer this though so check around and call local crisis centers or your insurance provider [if you have one]

If you do not have issue with going to a church or religious institution for counselling/therapy…. your church or synagogue [or other institution] could put you in touch with a pastoral counselling program. Certified pastoral counselors, who are ministers in a recognized religious body, have advanced degrees in pastoral counseling, as well as professional counseling experience. Pastoral counseling is often provided on a sliding-scale fee. For more information check out the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

Another thing to try are community health or community mental health centers. Like the above-mentioned places, fees are on a sliding scale based on income.

Try to connect with groups like mentalhealthamerica, which provide services and resources at a low cost. They also help people navigate the health system and problem solve. 

Also keep in mind that at large research universities, they often have counselling available for students and others at low costs or, again, on sliding scales.

Check out a women’s shelter or crisis center in your area for additional specific resources and information on free support or self help groups. These shelters and centers should also have information on people of low income or in bad financial situation.

  • The Partnership for Prescription Assistance The Partnership for Prescription Assistance helps qualifying patients without prescription drug coverage get the medicines they need through the program that is right for them. Many will get their medications free or nearly free.
  • Benefits for People with Disabilities The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities.

  • MentorConnect: The first Global EDs mentoring community where those who are solid in their healing mentor those who are still in the healing process, free of charge.
  • Moonshadow’s Spirit: Offers financial assistance to individuals who are seeking inpatient or partial hospitalization eating disorder programs.
  • Multi-Service Eating Disorder Association (MEDA): Provides National Phone Consultations to individuals concerned about their eating/exercise behaviors, and to loved ones of those struggling with eating disorders. A clinician who specializes in eating disorders will gather information, discuss questions or concerns and provide referral resources. Call 1-866-343-MEDA to schedule an appointment.
  • Project HEAL: A non-profit created by three young women intended to offer support for those who want to heal from their eating disorders. Scholarship applications for treatment are available.

to the anorexia anon: 130 is an incredibly healthy weight for most teenagers/adults, actually, on lots of people, it's a little/a lot UNDERWEIGHT. As Safet said, your weight means nothing unless the number is really high or low. It doesn't determine your intelligence or beauty or selfworth. It's actually better to be slightly overweight than it is to be underweight, and there are a ton of longtime illnesses caused by anorexia. You are amazing. Please don't do anything you'll regret.

Well, if the weight is really high or low, yes i agree it’s concerning in that it may, effect your physical health, but it still shouldn’t be a marker of what kind of a person you are. You are still beautiful on the inside, strong on the inside… etc. 

And… It’s really hard to say what weight is healthy for each person (what with their personal needs based on their lifestyle, how muscular they are, age, other needs …etc) : ] That’s why I think the anon should go to the doctor to talk about weight if it really is that much of a concern for them.

To the anon that wants to have anorexia-- I'm currently in recovery for anorexia, and I would never wish this on anyone. My GI tract is completely messed up, leading to no BMs and vomiting + agonizing pain. I had to go to the ER in June because I hadn't been able to go to the bathroom for over a week. It was painful, embarrassing, and agonizing. Recovery isn't pretty, and neither is the disorder. My body was starting to shut down, and now I have to completely restart. Don't do this to yourself

TW: I feel the last Anon's anger over someone wishing they had anorexia so they could be skinny, but I think it's a little unfair to be so hard on them. As someone who's been bulimic for 7 years, I can understand someone "wanting" to be anorexic. My thought was always "well at least they get to be skinny" (most bulimics don't actually lose weight), but when I was in group therapy, anorexics would say the inverse about my bulimia; "At least you get to eat." My relationship with food is warped too

I do agree that it’s unfair to be hard on them…. and I also understand the anger.

I just think it’s important to see past the seemingly “good” parts of these disorders and really look at the whole picture. Not just at the resulting symptoms and emotions, but also at how someone in that situation would feel.

I feel as if … there’s nothing wrong if you want to have something or wish to have something. It doesn’t make you a bad person. Perhaps, a misinformed or misguided person…. but not a bad one.

If you use these wants and wishes to hurt others though, it does make you bad. But this was not that anon’s intent. I think that anon wanted to get this out into the open to have people listen. And that’s completely all right. : ]

Disillusionment can be such a harsh thing… but it can also be so beneficial to a person’s growth.

To the anon who wants to have anorexia: My best friend had anorexia. She beat it, but since then she isn't able to gain weight and she hate herself for that because rather than being so thin, she WISHES she could gain weight and would weigh more than 45 Kg. Being anorexic must be horrible..

Anorexia is so much more complex and difficult than the media and society and general make it out to be.

People, @ - @ please educate yourselves. To the anon that sometimes wishes they had anorexia… I think I can understand why you would wish for that… but you only see the “skinny” part… while that really isn’t all that anorexia is. It’s what the media wants us to believe. 

Please take care of your body though. You deserve to be healthy and happy.

Your weight isn’t a measure of your self worth, strength, beauty, intelligence, or character. 

It’s simply a number. Nothing more. 

And you’re so much more than that. 

And, please realise that being anorexic isn’t being thin. It’s a much more complex battle than that. 

It’s more important that you be kind to yourself and your body. If the weight gain is a concern to you, talk to your doctor about the effects of the medication and ask if there is anything they would recommend for you specifically. 

I’m not in a place to recommend ways to alter lifestyle because I don’t know your health/medical needs.

If weight has become the biggest concern in your mind, I also encourage you to talk to a professional about this and/or talking to peers/trusted adults because you don’t have to go through this alone.
